Influence of magnetic fields on cold collisions of polar molecules

چکیده
We consider cold collisions of OH molecules in the P3/2 ground state, under the influence of a magnetic field. We find that modest fields of several thousand gauss can act to suppress inelastic collisions of weakfield-seeking states by two orders of magnitude. We attribute this suppression to two factors: sid an indirect coupling of the entrance and the exit channel, in contrast to the effect of an applied electric field; and siid the relative shift of the entrance and exit scattering thresholds. In view of these results, magnetic trapping of OH may prove feasible.

Ultracold molecular collisions in combined electric and magnetic fields
We consider collisions of electric and magnetic polar molecules, taking the OH radical as an example, subject to combined electric and magnetic static fields. We show that the relative orientation of the fields has an important effect on the collision processes for different fields’ magnitudes at different collision energies. This is due to the way the molecules polarize in the combined electri...
متن کاملDynamics of OH(2pi)-He collisions in combined electric and magnetic fields.
We use accurate quantum mechanical calculations to analyze the effects of parallel electric and magnetic fields on collision dynamics of OH(2pi) molecules. It is demonstrated that spin relaxation in 3He-OH collisions at temperatures below 0.01 K can be effectively suppressed by moderate electric fields of order 10 kV cm(-1). We show that electric fields can be used to manipulate Feshbach resona...

Controlling interactions between cold molecules using external fields can elucidate the role of quantum mechanics in molecular collisions. We create a new experimental platform in which ultracold rubidium atoms and cold ammonia molecules are separately trapped by magnetic and electric fields and then combined to study collisions. We observe inelastic processes that are faster than expected from...
متن کاملSuppression of inelastic collisions between polar molecules with a repulsive shield.
We propose and analyze a technique that allows one to suppress inelastic collisions and simultaneously enhance elastic interactions between cold polar molecules. The main idea is to cancel the leading dipole-dipole interaction with a suitable combination of static electric and microwave fields in such a way that the remaining van der Waals-type potential forms a three-dimensional repulsive shie...
متن کاملNo evaporative cooling of nitric oxide in its ground state
Cold collisions of N16O molecules in the 2 1/2 ground state, subject to electric and magnetic fields, are investigated. It is found that elastic collision rates significantly exceed state-changing inelastic rates only at temperatures above 0.5 K at laboratory-strength fields. It is found, however, that in very large fields, >104 V/cm, inelastic rates can be somewhat suppressed. Magnetic fields ...
